Dick Williams saying not a big offseason for Reds. Doesn't need to be IMO. He is targeting bullpen and bench help. Right on. The rotation will hopefully only take this season to sort out. The bullpen with Iglesias and Lorenzen showed signs of stabilization down the stretch. A few decent and not even high leverage bullpen arms(ie closer/setup types) and this becomes effective. With the offensive boom in the 2nd half that I think that was induced by young players developing a batting cage cult around Joey Votto they have already made themselves respectable. The 76 run jump from 640 to 716 runs represents real progress. We had not seen that type of offense even in the playoff years of 2012-13. 5 years ago in 2011 they scored 735 runs after the 790 in 2010. Also to put up a roughly .500 record after some of the worst Reds baseball we had seen in years in the first half to me means they are not quitters. All in all to me it means we are well on our way or at least have set sail in the right direction. While it may not be the most glitzy offseason it's one I am looking forward to.

That's good news. Phillips put together a solid season and he has given us and this team his all but we have to move forward.

The Reds have added 7 minor league players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the upcoming Rule-5 draft:
OF-Aristides Aquino(A+) RHP-Barrett Astin(AA) OF-Phil Ervin(AA) RHP-Keury Mella(A+) RHP-Jackson Stephens(AA) RHP-Nick Travieso(AA) OF-Jesse Winker(AAA)
Notable omissions, and will be potential rule 5 picks by other teams: P-Alejandro Chacin(AA) P-Jonathan Crawford(A+) P-Nick Routt(AAA) 2B-Brandon Dixon(AA) SS-Carlton Daal(AA) C-Chad Wallach SS-Zach Vincej

Astin had a breakout season last year. He could be here as yet another power reliever(100 inning potential). Stephens and Mella look statistically similar. We will need at least 1 of these what I am deeming control type pitchers to step up and be rotation cogs.
Little surprised about Nincej but I guess with Rodriguez in the fold they feel middle infielders are not a necessity.

I've heard speculation around the net about trading Duvall at his potential peak and rolling with Winker to have a more contact/AVG type offense. But even down the stretch the lack of power did hurt our run production. We need HR's to come from somewhere so I'd hold off on that idea.

I think this Cecil contract just set the reliever market and priced us right out of it. Looks like this will test our new GM's creativity right off. To be continued...

Seattle just traded for Jean Segura so they will no longer be a landing spot for Cozart.

Reds DFA C-Ramon Cabrera & P-Keyvius Sampson to create room for the following waiver claims:
C-Juan Graterol(From the Angels): He's 27, and originally signed by the Royals in 2005 out of Venezuela. He hit .300 2HR 23RBI 10BB 27K in 227AB's at the AAA level. .286 0HR 3RBI in 14AB for the Angels. Threw out 32% of attempted baserunners.
OF-Gabby Guerrero(from Arizona): He's only 22, and a nephew to Vladimir Guerrero. 2012 Dominican Summer League MVP. Ranked as Mariners #5 prospect when he was traded from Seattle to Arizona in 2015. Dude has really struggled in the upper minors though. Hit .222 7HR 47RBI 23BB 108K in 260AB at AA in 2015. Hit .234 9HR 54RBI 29BB 101K in 418AB in AA/AAA(about 75% in AA) level this past year.

Not Reds related, but NL Central related...The Pee-Rats are working on a trade which would send Andrew McCutchen to the Fighting Dusty Bakers. They hope to have the deal done in the next day or so.

I'd file this under the ignorant speculation folder. Hamilton hasn't proved he can stay healthy or get on base for a whole season=which means his trade value is severely diminished even though we can all see his potential. Some might say the potential is the trade value. I disagree. Trading him now gets you what a bullpen arm? If he stays and fails we could get nothing. If he stays and hits like he did in the 2nd half we aren't trading him period. So I'd rather roll the dice with him on the roster than trade for a low ceiling player. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/rangers-interested-in-billy-hamilton.html
