I don't know where you started to have doubts about this team but for me it was in June of 2013 where we had just made like a 12-8 run and looked like we were picking up momentum, then inexplicably started playing shitball. But we did rally later in the year especially that series where we swept the Dodgers so all was back intact. By June 2014 it was clear to all of us it wasn't working. By last offseason I admit I didn't have a lot of confidence but still felt there was a glimmer of hope. But Iliked the returns we got for Latos and Simon. That was a good start and I wanted more. But by midseason it was time for a full blown firesale and we all knew it and had burnt up enough "value" time because of holding players. It was the first time in over a decade I had seen everybody I know be in total apathetic mode regarding the Reds. The underwhelming trade with Frazier the other day was another nail in the hand to the fan cross. It made me think of this in terms of a timeline and a hierarchy for a rebuild, here's what I came up with;
1)start firesale in between 2014-15 seasons when player value is at it's highest
2)come out guns ablazing and trade everybody about to be a free agent or that costs money at the trade deadline
3)trade valuable pieces for A returns
4)trade valuable pieces for B returns
5)hold onto players if the returns aren't right and be stuck
The absurdity of not doing options 1 and 2 put us into a precarious position to where teams could basically abuse us and outplay us. Especially with the outdated, homer crew we have assembled for a front office. After the Frazier trade it is clear option 3 is out so where we are at if you are grading each of these options out and we have traded our best piece for an insignificant return is option 4. A "D" grade at best.A D- with the fact Chapman is in limbo.
So they have nobody to blame but themselves for unrealistic expectation and only a fool's patience. But it can be worse. heading into the season stubbornly holding onto who's left and spinning pipe dreams is an even more horrifying road to go down. Suck it up, get what you can get ,and get on with the future...
As a comparative point, watching the Bengals fail repeated with their old regime from 2005-2009 was the most irritating thing to watch. You didn't want to watch. Once they got rid of Carson Palmer and few other divas, drafted another QB and some other good players, I felt the most relaxed I had been for years. It was the start of something new and while a lot of people were on suicide watch I found myself with a renewed sense of vigor and optimism. It was starting over but represented a new set of hopes and aspirations. I was ready for it and embraced it.
That's what I want for the Reds right now. Get rid of Phillips and Bruce and Chapman. All you have left is one guy who costs $ but IMO will hit his entire career and with a comparable contract to the ridiculous Heyward one, I would consider a king's ransom return for Votto also. Longstory short you get cheap and you add prospects.
Losing the those first 3 in addition to Frazier would satisfy me for the offseason. And I tell you what, I'd want to be down at GABP this summer fairly often. Because I know it's the wise thing to do and wins are right around the corner. Along with a surplus of payroll and a new tv deal.
