No doubt. 5 IP. 0 hits, 0 walks, 1 runner by error, 10 K's. One story I saw on him said he's faced 16 batters. Don't know if that means the 1 runner by error was doubled up or not. But if not, that would mean he's faced 17 instead. Throwing his fastball from 94 to 98. Supposedly, he wasn't hitting 98 before. So, he must have been pitching through the hip injury even at the start of last season, when he was doing well before being sent down. He relieved Bailey yesterday. Garrett went 3 innings with 6 K's. Bailey went 3 innings as well, but gave up two solo shots.

What Garrett is showing is looking very promising...more like what he was doing in AA. That hip injury must have been bothering him more than he was letting on too. He's making a strong case so far to make the team...he and Mahle.

He's making a strong case so far to make the team...he and Mahle. Yeah, I guess it might not have been as bad this time last year. He was able to pitch with it effectively anyhow. And then it just got gradually worse, to the point that he lost all effectiveness. I don't know if that is the case... but it's starting to look like that's probably how it played out. I hope so. That means he's less of a headcase than I thought he was. But on the other hand, he apparently kept quiet about the injury when he could have been using some form of treatment. I'm calling a DOH! on myself for my last post. Haven't been sleeping well lately, so my math is apparently fuzzy. 16 batters faced with one base runner (by error) is right on the money. Don't know why I was thinking that the numbers were off by one.

Reds not hitting through 11 games. This is the top 9 we know will make the team.

I was not a big fan of this kid after watching him his 1st year here. I thought he was an average hitter at best, and a terrible SS. Well, he's a great 3rd baseman now, and a very solid hitter who only appears to be getting better. Clearly I missed on the Suarez evaluation, and the Reds did not. Great, great, great, team friendly signing.

Eric Jagielo has been traded to the Marlins for cash. That means broken down Rookie Davis is the only player left in the system we acquired in the Chapman trade.

Nick Senzel assigned to minor league camp. He will focus on playing 2B in Louisville.

Nick Senzel assigned to minor league camp. He will focus on playing 2B in Louisville. That's the logical spot for him. If Peraza fails we have SS's coming up through the system. Gennett is a nice stopgap and Herrerra is bust IMO. This is where I've had him penciled in from jump. What about you Brad?

Gennett is a nice stopgap and Herrerra is bust IMO. This is where I've had him penciled in from jump. What about you Brad? I completely disagree. I have no idea why we are playing him at 2b. We have a number of kids that can play 2b, not to mention Gennett. We have NOBODY at SS outside of Peraza. And no, we have no one close in the system at SS. All options that are worth their salt, are at Dayton or lower. This is a decision that is typical Reds decision making. Why would you play him at SS, when you knew he wouldn't make the team out of spring training? Why not play him at 2b in the spring? All this does is buy time for Peraza, and somehow makes him feel that no one is nipping at his heels this season. And this is not about defensive capabilities either. Benevidas, Price, and Larkin have been hugely positive in their comments about Senzel at SS. Senzel has made ONE error at SS this spring, with a really nice play under his belt also. Peraza, and Pennington, both have made 3 errors at SS this spring. Senzel at SS, gives us the opportunity to NOT have a production drop off at SS this season, but instead, we will have a HUGE production drop off. Peraza and Hamilton in the same lineup, along with a pitcher. What a shame!
