Mesoraco probably won't be ready to go by opening day. I would leave him in AAA and have Barnhart catching Wallach on the bench.

Little on my roster fill outs. Bench As an older player that can hit I keep Irribaren. There is no reason to send him to AAA. This is a perfect bench player. Alcantara is probably the most talented of the bench players to choose from. In 108 AAA games last year he still had 32 stolen bases. He is a switch hitter. And many think he has more talent than he has shown. Rayburn has big power off the bench and his year with Cleveland was solid. Rotation I really do get the service time argument and that we aren't winning the world series this year. But I don't believe in punting a whole season either because of 2 injuries. I initially saw as a surprise candidate and still think that. But only if the best players are on the team. We go the conservative route and lose our ass in April then the season is gone. High draft pick. I cannot argue with that. But I don't see it as jeopardizing the future if players like Garrett or even Romano made the rotation. What you do if you are worried about service time 5 years from now is trade players sooner. You can't keep them all anyway which is what got us in trouble this last go round. Garrett goes into the rotation. I see keeping a guy like Arroyo around just in case young pitchers fail and their arms don't get excess innings and excess abuse. Safety net plain and simple. But not opposed to Romano being there either. Bullpen As a lefty I see Peralta as getting in. For the stuff he has he doesn't get a lot of strikeouts but does get ground balls. His first season as a reliever was solid and he got better later in the year. 2.33 ERA at AAA with a 1.95 GO/AO. Barrett Astin especially after watching him is IMO going to be potentially one of the best relievers in baseball. And he can spot start. Had 11 starts last year. Could be another one of the relievers that can go multiple innings. He had 96 K's in 103 innings and a phenomenal 2.42 GO/AO rate. His breaking stuff is simply amazing. And he walks hardly any. He is in. www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=milb&player_id=592120#/career/R/pitching/2017/ALLwww.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=milb&player_id=593974#/career/R/pitching/2017/ALLStephenson as 8th man gives us flexibility if starters can't go very long. Which IMO will be the case early.

I mostly agree, but I think Desmond Jennings makes the team at the expense of one of the bullpen guys. Stephenson, Garrett or Astin most likely being the one in Louisville. YoYo still hasn't built many innings up to be able to stretch his arm out either with essentially a 2 year lay off, which could put a guy like Tim Adelman into the yo-yo spot.
You won't need a 5th starter until Sunday, so you can always make a guy like Adelman available in the bullpen(as your 8th reliever) early in the week in case long relief is needed which also creates space for Jennings. I'll just be shocked if he doesn't make the squad.

I see they are pitching him in long relief role in spring. I figured they were just using two starters in same game. I think he is in rotation and Garrett is in Louisville till May. I think we control him another year if he is left in AAA till May. I think Garretts spot goes to Desmond Jennings. If Mez goes to D.L. I imagine Rob Brantley would be Barnharts backup.

I had hope for this season but if Disco is out long it is gonna hurt us big time as he is closest thing to a Ace we have right now. Just too many rotation question marks and I hope it don't burn out our bullpen by June. Because if not over used I think it has the makings of a very solid pen.

Hope we will strike gold again like last season with another Straily.

I am hearing Jennings is moving/running better than he has in a long time. He had makings of a very good player at one time. Maybe he can revise his career in Cincinnati.

Red I think we have more talent than you realize. It might be slightly irrational to put the best 5 in the rotation but I would. BTW getting a live look at Rookie Davis yesterday damn. Built like a tank. Has mid to upper 90's velocity. He might be the lone resurrection piece in that Chapman trade. He was hurt last year but pitched through it. Velocity is up. I expect big things from him.

I would utilize Stephenson in the spot first but would seriously be considering Romano after a few weeks. Some of these second tier pitchers have opened my eyes.

I am with you Rod on Adelman. I hope he is not on the team pen or rotation. He isn't more than a AAA arm. I like what I saw from Rookie Davis as well and Romano. Pitch the kids sort out who you wanna keep and who you don't. Start shaping the roster for the next playoff push. I think it could come as early as 18. Gonna be tought to win a division with Cubs in it. They should be good for at least 5 years. But Wildcard is all you need. Get in that's the key anything can happen. We have saw many wildcard teams win the world series.

Opening Day Team Hamilton CF Peraza 2b Votto 1b Duval LF Schebler RF Suarez 3b Cozart SS Barnhart C
Bench Alcantara Iribarren Turner Renda Kivlehan Brantly
Starting Rotation Feldman Finnegan Reed Romano Arroyo (won't be on the opening day roster though)
Bullpen Iglesias Cingrani Lorenzen Luetge Wood Chacin Storen Astin
Mesoraco will start on the DL. Arroyo will get one more start in, before having to be added to the roster.
I expect they'd like to hold off on Romano, but one of he and Garrett are going to have to start in the minors due to team control, and Garrett is the more important prospect. I left Jennings off the roster. This is more hope than anything else. Jennings has been hurt off and on this spring, and quite frankly, he can't hit. He is washed up, and I'd much rather see a younger kid get a shot. I love what Renda, Alcantara (if he can learn to hit off speed), and Iribarren offer. Renda is a gamer. This kid is like a Freel, in that he will always outperform his "makeup". Iribarren is a guy who has finally earned this opportunity, knows his role, and is a huge sounding board, and mentor for the young Hispanic players.
It would not surprise me to see them find a way to put Storen on the DL to start the season. I'm not sure what his deal is, but he looks completely washed up. Let's pray Cozart has a huge April and May. He looks great, and quite frankly, he continues to impress. Cozart could ultimately bring this team some young talent. A great couple of months from him, and an injury or two around the league at SS, is what we need. I'm very excited, but it's going to be a long season, and at some point this team has to find some health. Year after year, since the 5 starters went all season long, we have seen so many injuries on Red's teams.

Year after year, since the 5 starters went all season long, we have seen so many injuries on Red's teams. Pretty solid for a 27 man roster! What 2 do you cut? I pretty much agree with everything. Especially about Irribaren and Renda. The Freel comp is spot on and as you said Irribaren has earned his spot and could fit nicely off the bench. For all the reasons you mention. Alcantara's versatility and athleticism do it for me. Fairly indifferent to bench players beyond this. Most of the kids have been getting banged up in their latest starts but because Romano has no AAA experience I bet they pass him up for the rotation and go with Garrett or Davis. I agree with you abour Garrett's importance for keeping longer but I also think because we are so hurt in the rotation they will go with best now approach and keep Garrett. Arroyo will be around just to absorb innings in case others fail. I mentioned Stephenson to pen because I think they will want a long man or even 2 to start the season. Bullpen I have changed my mind on Peralta because of walks and non performance. Like the Luetge as specialist lefty. Don't know what to think of Storen either. I like Chacin but don't think they will offer him even a chance. What's most mind boggling about him is he has big K numbers but is not a big fastball pitcher. Amazing! Anyway feels good to have a post again! I know everybody doesn't think about baseball til the last NCAABB game is played and many have punted the Reds. Good to hear from somebody SoCal! LOL!

LOL. I meant to have 26, noting that Arroyo wouldn't be on the opening day roster, and someone would have to go. I also realized that this team is going to carry 8 relievers, so I forgot to take Brantly off the list. You may be right about Romano, but he's been so good, that I think he may have sold himself, and again, I honestly don't think they want to start Garrett's clock, when keeping him down for 2 weeks, would give them a whole additional year of control. The Reds keeping Garrett with the squad on day one would be the biggest surprise of all for me. You may be right about Stephenson, because the bullpen options aren't looking as good, and he may not ever get over the hump to be a true starter, so why not keep him in the bullpen. As for Storen, they have to be shaking their heads wondering what the hell is wrong with him, and why did they give him 3 mil. I'm still holding out hope that he starts on the DL. I never thought Chacin had a chance either, but what was looking like a possible deep bullpen is not looking rather thin. Can't wait to find out on all this though.

Chris, I like your roster. But Price has pretty much indicated that they are going to go with a 4 man bench.I saw Renda has options so that will play a part in the desicion I'm sure. I agree about Storen he may be done. They seem to think it is not a concern but of course they are gonna down play it to us. Maybe a bust of a signing and it was a major league signing. Anyway I am ready for opening day injuries or not. I wanna see the kids play so they can find out who is gonna make it and who isn't gonna be around on the next contending team. Only way to know for sure is put there feet under the fire in the majors and see how they respond.
