Just saw on Yahoo Fantasy predicting Reds rotation will be last in all of baseball. Hope we prove that wrong by no small margin. If I was Price I'd make a collage of similar headlines and put it in the clubhouse starting tomorrow.

Looks like some of this stuff is shaping up today with the number of cuts, and the acquisition of Gennett. Bench Alcantara Gennett Turner Kivlehan
Starting Rotation Feldman Finnegan Reed Davis Arroyo
Normally I would love the purchase of Gennett. I think the kid is a quality player, and is still young at 26. The problem is, he's rather expensive for what you are getting, and $2.6 mil right now for a bench player really isn't worth it. Even if you said well, he's a good long term bench/utility guy. True, but he's already making $2.6 mil. That number isn't going downwards. Think about it. $3 mil for Storen, and $2.6 mil for Gennett is $5.6 mil completely wasted. This assuming Storen is a bust, which he may very well be.

Yeah against RHP he only has a .321 OBP over 3 years. At 2.6 mil it is a total waste. I would absolutely rather roll dice on Irribaren. In the big scheme of things 5-6 mil might not seem like much. But dumb spending is still dumb spending. I would have rather dumb spent on Joe Blanton.

Opening Day TeamHamilton CF Peraza 2b Votto 1b Duval LF Schebler RF Suarez 3b Cozart SS Barnhart C BenchAlcantara Iribarren Turner Renda Kivlehan Brantly Starting RotationFeldman Finnegan Reed Romano Arroyo (won't be on the opening day roster though) BullpenIglesias Cingrani Lorenzen Luetge Wood Chacin Storen Astin Mesoraco will start on the DL. Arroyo will get one more start in, before having to be added to the roster. I expect they'd like to hold off on Romano, but one of he and Garrett are going to have to start in the minors due to team control, and Garrett is the more important prospect. I left Jennings off the roster. This is more hope than anything else. Jennings has been hurt off and on this spring, and quite frankly, he can't hit. He is washed up, and I'd much rather see a younger kid get a shot. I love what Renda, Alcantara (if he can learn to hit off speed), and Iribarren offer. Renda is a gamer. This kid is like a Freel, in that he will always outperform his "makeup". Iribarren is a guy who has finally earned this opportunity, knows his role, and is a huge sounding board, and mentor for the young Hispanic players. It would not surprise me to see them find a way to put Storen on the DL to start the season. I'm not sure what his deal is, but he looks completely washed up. Let's pray Cozart has a huge April and May. He looks great, and quite frankly, he continues to impress. Cozart could ultimately bring this team some young talent. A great couple of months from him, and an injury or two around the league at SS, is what we need. I'm very excited, but it's going to be a long season, and at some point this team has to find some health. Year after year, since the 5 starters went all season long, we have seen so many injuries on Red's teams. Pretty solid for a 27 man roster! What 2 do you cut? I pretty much agree with everything. Especially about Irribaren and Renda. The Freel comp is spot on and as you said Irribaren has earned his spot and could fit nicely off the bench. For all the reasons you mention. Alcantara's versatility and athleticism do it for me. Fairly indifferent to bench players beyond this. Most of the kids have been getting banged up in their latest starts but because Romano has no AAA experience I bet they pass him up for the rotation and go with Garrett or Davis. I agree with you abour Garrett's importance for keeping longer but I also think because we are so hurt in the rotation they will go with best now approach and keep Garrett. Arroyo will be around just to absorb innings in case others fail. I mentioned Stephenson to pen because I think they will want a long man or even 2 to start the season. Bullpen I have changed my mind on Peralta because of walks and non performance. Like the Luetge as specialist lefty. Don't know what to think of Storen either. I like Chacin but don't think they will offer him even a chance. What's most mind boggling about him is he has big K numbers but is not a big fastball pitcher. Amazing! Anyway feels good to have a post again! I know everybody doesn't think about baseball til the last NCAABB game is played and many have punted the Reds. Good to hear from somebody SoCal! LOL! Quoting myself because I got the rookies right in the rotation. Good job by the Reds IMO. Stephenson to the pen too and Reed takes Adelman's place. Solid. www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/reds/2017/03/28/young-arms-make-reds-rotation/99762176/

Seeing the news while half asleep in the middle of the night I literally needed to sleep on it! What a great day to be a Reds fan. Now before I go any further I completely realize those of you who will critique many of these moves with service time being the leading narrative. I can't argue with that. But in my mind a new era has dawned for the Reds and this offseason GM Dick Williams has won me over bigtime. I think in recent years a confused and outdated front office had a passive, conservative, indecisive, and ultimately unproductive approach in place, if any approach at all. I see some of this reflected in many clubs. I think some are afraid to get to the bottom of things too quickly. Their work validated or invalidated in rapid succession. I see what is happening here and now as a true definition of a rebuild and a fearless approach geared toward getting on with the getting on. Addressing one of the worst bullpens in baseball in 2016 and a hurt rotation already they called up Garrett, Davis, Astin, Peralta, and brought back Reed and Stephenson. All in an attempt to put the best players available on the team and get them MLB experience one way or another. Not filler and fodder. With all those additions I don't see Arroyo being a big hold up either. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty to promote young players. And in a rebuild getting the bulk of them up here to get innings is exactly finding out what we have. With the final jettison of Phillips this offseason and the GM answering my concerns about timidity from the Reds, I can say, good or bad, I am fully ready to embrace this season and am excited. At best I think we make a mild run. At worst we see exactly what we have and who we are and that is the entire point anyway. This is doing it the right way IMO and today I am proud to be a Reds fan.

Also Dick Williams says there will potentially be a lot of moving arts regarding pitchers. A truly different approach. Here is a quote:
"Of that group of young pitchers, I don't think anybody should expect to see those guys lined up that particular way for very long. Romano is in the Minors right now. He is going to pitch in the big leagues. Those guys that are in the big leagues, they will have time in Triple-A. It's very possible that any of those guys could appear for a certain period of time in the Major League bullpen. There's a lot of ways you can get these guys experience, a lot of ways to manage their innings. I would not read into this Opening Day setup as some permanent pref-list or ranking.'"

Rod, nice call on some of your predictions. The Stephenson prediction to the bullpen, and the Garrett in the rotation especially were pretty darn good. I would have bet the house big-time that neither of those two things was going to happen. I got thinking more and more about the Garrett issue with his "clock", and the more I think about it, the clock is probably not a factor. It's only a factor if Garrett never gets sent back down, and is ultimately an above average major leaguer. There are pretty good chances with his lack of experience that he sees enough ups and downs, coupled with innings limits that he could find his way back to AAA for at least 2 or 3 weeks, which would erase the issues/concerns of the Reds losing a year of control of him.

I think it's the Dick Williams effect. Already. I think we have had some lame duck GM'ing and this is definitely a breath of fresh air. I feel like the last 2 seasons it was the waiting around on getting to a full rebuild that was more painful than the losing itself. Once you are over the heartbreak of realizing your team needs a rebuild you are ready to get on with it. Finally that full day is here. We started to see what happened late last year with it. I'm optimistic but either way these next 6 months we are going to find out a lot about who and what this team is. That's exciting! And I'm down for the long haul. I believe in what we are doing and confident we will get there.
