I don't mind them signing Feldman per se, but I wish it wasn't on a MLB contract. Williams said today that Feldman will be in the rotation this upcoming season. We've also got to clear a spot on the 40-man with him. I would have like to see a deal like what we had with Straily last year. Could provide long relief or swing to the rotation if the injury bug hit hard like it did last spring. Plus if Stephenson, Reed and/or Garrett are lights out, you could cut him and not worry about paying the contract. Those are 3 big time arms, but now it looks like there is going to be room for only 1, and I'm not 100% sure I like that. Also, the Reds are talking to future Reds Hall of Famer Bronson Arroyo about a minor league deal. I'd like to see him back, but maybe more as a roving pitching instructor as opposed to a guy taking innings away. Finally, Steve Selsky was claimed off waivers by Boston. I was hoping he'd stick as I think he can be a more than adequate 4th OF/pinch hitter. He didn't necessarily have the most "tools", but he can hit for a nice average and would be a nice option of the bench to PH when you need someone to make contact. I think at this point anyone we cut from the 40-man, chances are higher will get claimed. Really finally this time. Williams said the Reds are done signing guys to MLB contracts. Anyone else they pick up from here will all be minor league deals. Brad I am really liking this signing the more I think about things. The one big thing I was worried about was we could be 2 weeks into April, have a youth movement going on in the rotation and they are all getting torched and Bailey is missing starts. Nightmare scenario. For the record, at this point I am close to using the "B" word for Stephenson. Bust. If he doesn't get his head together or whatever it is I see him having next to no use, even in the pen. It would be smart to delay Garrett but he only has 11 starts above AA anyway. Reed I am interested in seeing because he has the talent and struggled with some injuries last year. So long story short Feldman can be just fine being an average starter and protecting young starters from bad situations. If the kids are all beatin the door down we have a best case scenario and he goes to the pen. If the pen is good he can be flipped. For the guaranteed cost which is only 2.3 mil and all the above scenarios I see it as a win win. Arroyo yeah I don't want to see him here in a uniform.

m.reds.mlb.com/news/article/215313624/reds-devin-mesoraco-looking-to-bounce-back/Couple last minute notes. Getting Mes back full time would be a boost. I hadn't really thought about it much. TBC.. Well less than a week before pitchers and catchers report. Feels like the year is finally starting to pick up some momentum. Don't know how your year has been thus far but I started off with a sprained foot and been sick twice already! Still upbeat about everything baseball included. Let's go!

My opinion about Mesoraco at this point is that if he contributes anything at all, its a bonus. I've written him off in my mind. We have Barnhardt and whoever backs him up. Mesoraco probably just gets in the way for a little bit. Not doubting his ability to hit at all. Its just that his frailty has made him an absolute non-factor.

Reds are expected to complete a trade of Brandon Phillips to the Braves on Sunday. The Reds will pay most of his salary, and are not expected to get much in return.

Even though it was clear that the reds wanted to move on from Phillips, they got zero in return. Actually they paid all of his salary just to get the braves to take him. Atlanta just lost Rodriguez their newly signed second baseman, so they had a need for Phillips. Can't understand why we couldn't have got anything of any value in return here? Both players we are receiving are in the category of non prospects. No forty man spot or invite to big league camp. From my perspective, we got hosed on this one. May have been better to wait until July 31st.

Eric, I am going to agree with you. Now I get the trade. Phillips wasn't part of the "rebuilding" of the Reds so the trade was to open up a spot to play either Herarra or Peraza. I get that BP could and has vetoed trades in the past. We are not privy to the inside info with the trade but one would have to guess that Atlanta was one of the teams that BP was now willing to be traded to and probably was the ONLY team that was willing to trade with the Reds to acquire BP So Atlanta had the Reds over a barrel and said they would take BP but was willing to give up absolutely nothing in trade. Yes, nothing. Two older minor league players not even on their 40 man roster one of whom is coming off his second TJ surgery is nothing. PLUS the Reds would have to take on 13M of the 14M owed to BP Thing is didn't Atlanta need BP due to a recent injury. I agree that Atlanta was holding most of the cards but the Reds did have an ace up their sleeve due the injury. The Reds obviously just folded up and gave in. Atlanta got a starting player for free. No salary to pay and gave up nothing. How often does this happen. Maybe the Reds need to hire Trump to start negotiating better deals and start winning again This rebuilding is being built with some pretty questionable trades and this is another one.

I was ready to DFA Phillips before spring training just so we can move on and I bet that is what he was told. Could care less about the return. We start the season with a clean slate. Totally into it.

That said. One of the best trades ever made. Phillips gave us everything he had shifting around in the lineup when asked and was able to change his game while playing unreal in the field. Not to mention his accessibility and fun he provided us fans. He will be one of my best Reds memories. Wish you well BP.

I'm with Rod on this one. We got nuttin in return, but it was all about clearing the roster spot for Herrera, who is in his last option year, so we've got to find out what we have in him. BP was fun while we had him, but this was best for all involved.

As far as no other choice but to give BP away for nothing how about
DFA or trade Cozart for nothing. If we give away anyone how about Cozart. Paraza is the Reds SS of the future. Why not keep BP ( a fan favorite who you are going to pay anyways) play him/BP at 2nd for a half of season or so and then bench him, DFA him or trade him for nothing and bring up Herrara.
Peraza has played a half season last year in several positions and now will be at 2nd until further notice. If we are going to play for the future put the future SS at short.

I see opening day Peraza at SS and Herrera at 2B. Cozart backs up SS. Peraza can slide over to 2nd on occasion. With Cozart's injury history and age but valid skillset I think we get maximum use of him as a backup and pinch hitter. It works in theory and I believe it will work in practice. Same cannot be said for Phillips. I think he would have created a problem.

I want to see Peraza and Herrara play NOW too. I want to see Duvall, Hamilton and Schebler play ever day and then later bring up Winker. I want to see the new 3rd baseman Nick Senzel some point this year too. I want to see Robert Stephenson, Reed and Garret. Let the young players play. Pitchers and catchers report today. Lets get this train moving. Lets make this team great again.

Price, has already came out and said Peraza will start at 2b and Cozart at ss. I bet Herrera is in AAA. What should be done is Peraza at ss Herrera at 2b. Play Cozart 3 times a week. 1 start at 3b 1 at 2b and 1 at ss. That would increase trade partners. Right now he is just a ss. If he got some reps at 3b and 2b if a contending teams 3b or 2b went down Cozart could be a fit for the contending team. No doubt in my mind he could play both 2b and 3b very good. This won't happen because thats thinking out of the box something the Reds know nothing about. 90% sure now that Herrera will be in AAA baring injury. Bailey hopes to be back with team by June. That sucks because had he been healthy and pitching well at deadline he could have been traded to a large payroll club needing pitching. Now we are stuck with him till least next July that's if he can even pitch again.

Garrett will be slightly delayed due to service time issues but other than that they'll pitch IMO. Feels good to start the season off like this.
