Looks like a real good trade for the Reds. Jim Bowden among others on Twitter think so anyways. We get a ton of potential. Starter, relief and OF
I like that this also opens another spot in the rotation for one of the young pitchers. Stephenson, Garret, Reed
Esp Stephenson. We been hearing about this guy since the old old old board. Time for him to shit or get off the pot

Double thumbs up. Getting Castillo by himself is nice but adding two more guys. I'll take it.

Looks like Castillo and Brice could be BP additions who are ready for the majors this year. Then you add Storen. Maybe this BP could shape up to be decent this year.

With Castillo's talent and after only 1 year as a starter he is on the fast track. Brice IMO is in the pen right now. He averaged about 95 mph last season.

So what do you guys see happening next?
Catcher is probably a given if just for spring training.
But I can see them looking at a starter. I have no idea who is out there?
I tell ya if they can pull off 1 more solid bullpen move(I like both Storen and Brice) the pen could get pretty good. Losing Straily puts more rotation crisis IF IF IF all the kids struggle like they did last year. I'd like to see 2 of Reed, Stephenson, or Garrett seize command of their opportunities.
Anyway what do you see next?

Not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited about this deal for just Castillo alone. I agree with whoever above said that Straily was found money. While he had a very nice season, there's not much history to show he could duplicate it. We clearly sold high on him(which we never seem to do), and got more than an adequate return. Bravo, Mr. Williams! Last time we dealt with the Marlins, we got Disco for Latos, and that worked out pretty damn well.
As for where to we go from here portion, I think we go out and try to find another Straily...a vet who could compete for a rotation spot or at a minimum provide long relief out the of the bullpen(similar to a Keyvius Sampson role late last year). Run the rotation with Homer, Disco, Finnegan, then let Stephenson, Reed, vet, Adelman, and the lot fight it out for the last spot. I'd start Garrett in AAA for the 1st few weeks to keep him in team control for the extra year similar to what the Cubs did to Kris Bryant a couple of years ago. Bullpen wise, I wouldn't go crazy here. I'd still attempt to take a flyer on Greg Holland if the price were right. I think I'm ok with Storen, Lorenzen, Iglesias, Jumbo, & Cingrani as a core 5
Also, I'd have Castenelli, and Williams to cave to whatever the hell Phillips wants and see about moving him to LA, who is searching for a 2B. Turn the infield to Peraza & Herrera, with Cozart being a utility guy backing up those 2 and Suarez at 3B...or hell even see if Cozart can win the 3B job.

Here are 2 more takes from Redleg Nation and Doug Gray on Castillo. redlegnation.com/2017/01/19/reds-marlins-trade-the-sequel/redsminorleagues.com/2017/01/20/cincinnati-reds-9-prospect-rhp-luis-castillo/Day later and still think this was a great move. The Straily love around the net is tenuous IMO but I liked the guy, we got good production out of him, he was a great teammate, and totally changed Finnegan for the better teaching him a changeup. So I wish Straily nothing but the best. But we pick up a guy that goes into that potential top level starter profile in the high minors and we get a guy in Brice that goes straight to the pen. Coupled with the Storen move I am officially on the Dick Williams bandwagon!

Agree with everything Brad, especially about getting Phillips out of here. It's a must. I am going to pick up the rotation in another thread(make the bullpen thread a pitching thread period) but remember we now have Brice going to the pen IMO. That bolsters my confidence because I am not discouraged by his brief stint with the Marlins last year.

Apparently the Reds are kicking the tires a little bit on former Baltimore C-Matt Weiters. Looks like its an option they are open to if Mesoraco hasn't progressed as much as they have hoped by the start of Spring Training

www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/01/reds-to-sign-scott-feldman.htmlLooking at a lefty with everybody else showcasing anew arm angle off 3 bad years. On Feldman lot of hits and little strikeouts. Not seeing any GB% to the article though. Was able to survive well enough in AL in the rotation and will be asked to do so here apparently. If I'm not mistaken we traded Dan Straily for 3 prospects and then went out and bought him? Where ya at with these moves?

I don't mind them signing Feldman per se, but I wish it wasn't on a MLB contract. Williams said today that Feldman will be in the rotation this upcoming season. We've also got to clear a spot on the 40-man with him. I would have like to see a deal like what we had with Straily last year. Could provide long relief or swing to the rotation if the injury bug hit hard like it did last spring. Plus if Stephenson, Reed and/or Garrett are lights out, you could cut him and not worry about paying the contract. Those are 3 big time arms, but now it looks like there is going to be room for only 1, and I'm not 100% sure I like that.
Also, the Reds are talking to future Reds Hall of Famer Bronson Arroyo about a minor league deal. I'd like to see him back, but maybe more as a roving pitching instructor as opposed to a guy taking innings away.
Finally, Steve Selsky was claimed off waivers by Boston. I was hoping he'd stick as I think he can be a more than adequate 4th OF/pinch hitter. He didn't necessarily have the most "tools", but he can hit for a nice average and would be a nice option of the bench to PH when you need someone to make contact. I think at this point anyone we cut from the 40-man, chances are higher will get claimed.
Really finally this time. Williams said the Reds are done signing guys to MLB contracts. Anyone else they pick up from here will all be minor league deals.
