Glad it's a quick turnaround. We need to get to .500 and bid farewell to September and move on! This is a cut and paste from week 3. Nobody seemed like yacking much so figured I'd start a new one. Guess 77 found a new spot that puts up 10K words a day or more! LOL
Thus far we have seen us be able to pass the ball. And yesterday was the day we saw the run game come together. We just have to put the big picture together. I have never really thought we had a "great" Offensive Line since the rebuild but they have been at least proficient. This year I think Zampese's growing pains and thus a lack of identity is wreaking havoc on our consistency. But, but, but..No game has been out of reach. The schedule has been brutal. We are not at full strength .And need this win Thursday. It could come together quickly because the talent is there. Just a few things;
-the lack of use of Gio Bernard-watching the moves Sproles put on the Steelers yesterday for a TD reminded me so much of how we could use Gio. He is too damn talented only to be squandered as a backup RB. Design some of the playbook to utilize his talents to the fullest. It will make life a lot easier for everybody.
-Dalton-I know it takes some time to develop a relationship with receivers but when AJ is taken away you absolutely have to put them on the map and not vice versa. These are the guys you have so you HAVE to throw to them. I got sick of hearing on every fuckin show yesterday about how much we are missing Jones and Co. Bullshit. Draw up big plays for these guys and throw the ball to them. It really is that simple, especially because you have no choice. See what happens. Fire baptism.
-Big Plays?-while the Broncos were busy making Big Boy plays trying to win the game we were trying to win small battles not the big war. That is embarrassing for the home opener which brings me to...
-Coaches-why were they not able to go for big plays? Why is their thinking too small? Why can't they make adjustments? Why is their thought process so glacial? I have really been proud of us being able to assemble a talented team and rack up winning seasons. But on the fly we get outcoached, the other guy is one step ahead of us. And we see this repeatedly against the best teams in the league. Last year it really started to wear me down. We have good not great coaches. They need to step their game up bigtime. Marvin said about as much in the press conference. But saying ain't doing. To be continued.
-Defense-last in sacks and all of the sudden prone to repeated big plays? We are only missing 1 guy and he is a linebacker so this is disturbing.
Anyway that's my thoughts the day after. What say you?

We can't go for big plays because Dalton doesn't have time to throw. All defenses have to do is shut down the run and the short pass on us. I still say they need to do some shifting of the OL. Winston is back isn't he? Put Whitworth at Guard and run the damn ball!

That's true to an extent Lost but he had some time Sunday til about mid game. They took AJ away and Andy has got to be willing to throw to other receivers and those receivers despite their lack of experience have to be written into the playbook beyond intermediary routes. This is the NFL, there is no luxury of easing a young player into the playbook. Unless you are willing to watch losses pile up. To me this is the big problem and that is exactly what is happening. It happened Sunday.

Opponents are playing one or two safeties deep to keep Andy Dalton and A.J. Green from beating them with big plays.
I agree with Rod that Giovani Bernard and his talents are being wasted away. Bernard should average 12-15 touches a game; maybe more.
Ken Zampese had a good debut in week one vs. the Jets. Since then, he's been inconsistent. The offense has no identity and the play calling is a mixed bag causing the offense to look confused and disorganized to much of the time.
Lewis is Lewis. He's done a good job at building the team up, but he hasn't shown 'that extra something' that would indicate that he's capable of winning the big one. Actually, his record belies the complete opposite.
Russell Bodine is killing the o-line and thus hampering the entire offense. Bodine has put together some solid stints at center this year, but he's still too inconsistent.
I'm getting really tired of beating this drum, but here goes. Domata Peko should not be on this team let alone starting. Peko was a good player at one time and one of my favorite Bengals, but father time paid him a visit around five years ago but the Bengals did nothing about it. Peko is consistently blown off the ball allowing opposing running backs to run through holes the size of an elephant.
Here's a list of Bengal starters that should be replaced ASAP in order of importance. 1) Domata Peko: Is no longer effective. He should retire. 2) Russell Bodine: Sometimes it takes a player four to five years to develop before they become a solid player. Maybe Bodine is this type of player. Maybe not. 3) Michael Johnson: Johnson has been in decline for two to three years now but once again the Bengals elected to do nothing about it. The good news is that the Bengals appear to have a better option sitting on the bench in Will Clarke. In limited snaps, Clarke has outplayed Johnson. 4) Shawn Williams: The big complaint about Williams play is that he's out of position far too often allowing the defense to be gashed for big plays several times this season. Like Michael Johnson, Williams replacement may be sitting on the Bengals bench in Derron Smith.
The Bengals have had some great performances this year by several players, but overall, this team just doesn't seem hungry enough to get the job done. My hope is that Vontaze Burfict and Tyler Eifert can inject some enthusiasm into both the defense and the offense. If not, this may be a year of could'a, would'a, should'a. Or worse.

I know any other time this would be early in this season to say, but tonight is an important game. You could almost say a must win simply because of the way they have been playing. Its prime time so, we all know our prime time record. Pitts plays KC which will be a tough game. Dre wont be playing which stings. Adam Jones will be the only corner out there with experience under his belt. We need this win to stay in the mix until some guys get back and hopefully the team begins to gel. I agree Gio is a weapon and needs to be used more. He can do it all. Andy needs to look for Boyd more. Whitworth needs to be at Guard to help the run and I guess they need him to help carry Bodine.

77 good thorough post and I completely agree top to bottom.
Lost it's not too early to say. Getting out of 2-2 in September was all I had in mind before game 1 snap for all the things mentioned heretofore. With increasing health and experience 2-2 is a good launch platform. We haven't played our best football yet. Little thinking on the feet and some versatility and this should be a convincing win.
WhoDey! Can't wait for tonight.

Couching does make a difference. This may be Lewis's last year. Knowing Brown like I do he will either promote from below or force the new coach to keep all of the assistants!!

IF he fired ML, Guenther would get promoted most likely. If not him, they would go outside. Nick Saban would be awesome but he would never come here. I am sick of even looking at ML on the sidelines. He has no back bone or passion for the team. He never stands up for his players. Only thing he is good at is drafting talent.

I don't think tonight's game will be close. I expect the Bengals to win this game running away. Bengals 38, Dolphins 17 with a late and meaningless TD by the Dolphins.
The Dolphins are banged up and their defense has been porous thus far. Andy Dalton should put up big numbers tonight. It would be easy to state that A.J. Green will have a big game, but I think C.J. Uzomah (or Tyler Kroft) and Tyler Boyd are due. Uzomah has been a victim of bad passes thrown his way throughout the season and Boyd is still adjusting. With the Dolphins focusing on A.J. Green tonight, look for both Uzomah/Kroft and Boyd to come up big.

I agree when it comes to coaches standing up for their players and how important it is in demonstrating that you, as a coach, have their backs. The Ste-elitists were blatantly holding during their game vs. the Bengals along with committing several other obvious fouls and Lewis did nothing. He should've given those officials an 'ear full' but all he did was stand there with his mouth hanging open. Weird. While coaching my 12U softball team this past spring/summer, I approached several officials about bad calls they made. The reason for doing so wasn't an attempt to get them to change the call, but to let them know that I'm watching them and I expect them to do a better job and make the same calls both ways. If a coach doesn't know to implement this very basic strategy, they have no business coaching and their silence will only beckon more calls that don't go their way.

Who Day!!! No problem! I feel the same. I love our little clique. I only wish I could find a way to put us out there so we have some new blood trickle in from time to time but hey we got plenty. Anyway let's get this smoothed out and the ball rollin. A 2-2 start is fine when you consider we lost some assistants and a coach and some personnel and have some big injuries/suspensions. This is the NFL it's tough. Get September in the rearview at .500 and let's start smashing people!

Halftime report
I was fucking pissed. I turned everything off in the simulcast room in the basement and by the time I got up the steps Miami had a TD! Jesus!
But we've buckled down and looked all business since.
