No doubt about it, the Bengals continue to suffer from 'Robert Geathers Syndrome' which is sometimes referred to as 'Domata Peko Syndrome'. The Bengals waived DE Marcus Hardison in favor of the ineffective - my career is over, Michael Johnson. Hardison has been injured the past two seasons, but when healthy, he was a beast on the field and has demonstrated far superior play to Johnson who has spent more time on the ground rolling around than standing upright. Hell, even Will Clarke has outplayed Johnson and he too was waived. This move makes no sense whatsoever, but what can we expect from a coach that doesn't learn from his mistakes.
The Bengals also waived rookie DT Josh Tupou electing instead to keep 31 year old DT Pat Sims on the roster. Sims played fair during the preseason, but not as well as Tupou and considering their age difference, keeping Tupou was a no-brainer. Tupou is massive and impossible to move as he proved during the preseason. In the Bengals last preseason game vs. the Colts, Tupou scored an amazing 82.8 grade per PFF. Sims was nowhere near this.
Here's another interesting tidbit. Both players selected in the fifth round are no longer with the team. K Jake Elliot and G/C J.J. Dielman are gone. Lets just hope that Hardison, Tupou, Elliiot and Dielman make it through waivers and land on the practice squad.
Like it or not, the Bengals are in the midst of rebuilding and their chances of winning the AFC North this year are average at best. So, instead of retaining 'washed up vets' that aren't going to be a part the teams future, why not retain the aforementioned rookies and/or younger players that have ten times more upside? But then again, what should we fans expect from a coach that can't manage a game clock?
