This has been the issue with the Reds all season long, with both failures out of the prospects, and of course injuries. After thinking on this a bit, I think we will see a complete overhaul of what is there right now, and what has been tried. My gut says we don't see Bailey, DeSclafani, or even Finnegan. I don't think they will overcome injuries, and quite frankly will probably be injured again. Here is what I see, and if it's actually the case, I find it quite exciting.
Castillo Romano Mahle Lopez Stephenson
Now granted, there is a great chance that some journeyman from the Cardinals will be in the rotation, but I'm hoping not. Personally, I'd love to see one of the three (Bailey, DeSclafani, or Finnegan) manage to prove me wrong and be effective next season, but I'm just not banking on it. You then have to look at what we have currently. Castillo is the real deal, and our next ace. Mahle is outstanding too. That's two young kids that quite frankly could be the best 1 & 2 we have had in years. Lopez looks like he may be right there along with the other two, and he's ready to go at 24. That leaves two other spots. Out of the current crop, I personally see Romano easily beating out the other kids. He throws hard, and is a bulldog, with great success in the minors, and now seems to be getting some confidence. The last spot is the big question. Stephenson looks like he's going to get the rest of this year to prove himself, and that's a huge edge over the other guys who are still struggling in AAA. Stephenson has the stuff, and has actually been decent so far this month, which could be a sign to come. I'm not confident on him, but unless someone from the outside, or one of the three injury guys makes it that far next year, I'm going with Stephenson.
What says you?

If healthy, I think Bailey is a lock due to his contract. Based on performance this year, Castillo should be a lock too. If Disco is healthy, I think past performance will guarantee him a shot too.
Mahle, has an elite fastball, with tremendous control and movement, however his other offerings right now are considered average at best. Maybe can survive off the fastball like Greg Maddux did for so long, but that is lofty standard, but he will have his chance. Coaches in Pensacola are speaking very highly on Jose Lopez, but I don't think he'll be allowed to jump from AA to MLB to start the year.
So... I'll go with
Bailey Castillo Disco Romano Feldman-type player
with Stephenson, Finnegan, Mahle, Garrett in that order next in line.

Brad, I was talking a year from now. I agree with you, at the beginning of next season, guys like Bailey, Disco, and possibly Finnegan will be there. I just don't see them lasting until this point in the season next year. I do agree with you, that no way Lopez starts the year, but I think he will rise quickly, and be here by this time next year. I hope he does anyway.

Stephenson drives me crazy but when you watch him he has the stuff. Let him take his lumps up here. He could turn it on at any point.
With Romano he's young. His walks went down and he endured a few bad outings and had a good one. I think they told him or he said it to himself=I am going to throw strikes and let the chips fall where they may. A lot of the pitchers we have seen this year don't trust their stuff. Romano can work.
Castillo man what a great fleecing of Miami!
Like you I don't trust any of the newly or oldly hurt bunch. Can't plan innings on DL frequent flyers.
Mahle intrigues me. They better bring him up in September or I will be pissed off.
Not going to get into the market or splits but we need to buy some pitching. This team is way more closer to kicking ass than they get credit for. Call me a homer. I just see it.

I was just asking the question, based on a year from now. Like you, I think this team has a really good chance to be good next year. There offense is excellent, and should be better next year. My question was a simple one with no agenda.

What is the deal with Romano? He throws harder than any starter except Castillo but he gets very few strikeouts or even swing and miss non strikeouts. Never was big strikeout pitcher in minors either. This time next year I hope that Bailey,Disco, Castillo and Stephenson are still pitching. I know odds are they won't be. I am hoping we trade in offseason for a decent pitcher and I hope we sign a Feldman type to give us a couple guys to go with Castillo, Bailey and Disco. Have a Romano or Stephenson in reserve to fill in for injures. I don't think the Reds view Finnegan as a starter going foward. I could be wrong but I would say they view him as a lefty in the pen. A wildcard that we are forgetting as a starter could be Lorenzen. Been talk of him moving back to rotation next season. One thing for sure they are over due to have a healthy season for the pitching. Sign me up as we can be a playoff contender next season if whoever the manager is plays the right guys and we get some health.

The way he throws will generate a lot more groundballs than strikeouts. Theoretically, it should help pitch counts and allow him to go deeper into games.
