Most baseball players don't arrive done. I think Peraza hasn't hit anywhere near his ceiling yet. He gets Billy's age and is doing the same thing I'll be thinking the same thing about him. I'm with you and Brian regarding Winker. If he could be Casey like but at the top of the order that would be a tremendous improvement and worth the defensive sacrifice. I still think defensive metrics contribute too much to WAR anyway. Rod, why do you think Peraza hasn't hit his ceiling? What is it about his play to this point, including minor leagues, that suggest he's somehow going to be a good hitter? He hits the ball weekly, and has absolutely ZERO plate discipline; in fact, he's getting worse when it comes to plate discipline, as he gets older. Why is he somehow given the rope that other 23 years old's are not given? I just don't understand the hype about this kid. He's 577 plate appearances into his major league career. What I don't get is writing him off as a finished project. I don't hear a lot of hype around anywhere about him. I think he will be a solid hitter, get better defensively, and steal bags. And I am giving him at least 2 seasons more.

Even in AAA, he's a .322 OBP guy in over 800 plate appearances. As the talent gets better, he seems to get worse. Let's be honest, we are talking about one of the weakest (physically) hitters in the game, including the minors, who swings at pitches like he's Vladimir Guerrero. In just short of 3000 plate appearances in professional baseball, the kid has a whopping total of 131 walks, and in almost 600 MLB plate appearances, just 14 walks. He is in his 7th professional season of baseball. I just don't see him becoming anything of value. I hope I'm wrong, because I don't think this team is looking elsewhere right now.

I get the concerns. But you aren't getting the player. This kid is a talented, athletic player. I see a kid that can hit. That has fielding and speed skills. But like yourself I see a problem with intentionality. He is struggling at the plate because he doesn't know what he wants to do. What type of hitter he wants to be. I see a confused but able kid. And over the years I've learned to look beyond minor league stats. Tony Renda last year had some great upper batting order stats but I don't think he is the solution. There is a 30 year old that rakes in the minors every couple of years. I see potential in Peraza. But that is as far as I can go. I share your concerns. In my opinion there is more there to see than is able to be seen. And I'm not being derogatory to you. Everything you say is definitely valid. Time will tell!

I think best thing to do right now would be send down Peraza till they decide on Cozart. Let Scooter play bring up a SS from AAA to backup Cozart. See if AAA does Peraza any good. Really have nothing to lose by trying it. I haven't given up on him yet. But It's tough to have him and Hamilton both in lineup.
