Feels good to get that first series W under the belt and get the stats and trends rolling.
Much like early April baseball you get some topsy turviness even from good teams and good players. Can't really say where we're at yet but good start nonetheless. We hit for average but had a 5-20 BB to K and were dismal with RISP. Series could have been a lot easier with just a few more than 4 RISP hits considering we had 25 at bats in the category. This IMO is a team still feeling itself out offensively. I remain optimistic about the lineup
Finnegan last night was an absolute beast. After a 25 pitch first he needed only 63 pitches the next 6 innings striking out 9 and allowing all of 1 baserunner. 2 total. At 88 pitches if deeper into the season he at least goes 8. He was fired up and fist pumping screaming "Let's go" after striking out the last batter he faced. If this is a sign of things to come=fuck yes!
Feldman is what he is but his peripherals indicate he is better than that and serviceable. Rookie Davis looked like a Rookie. For a guy with a 0.94 HR9 and 2.4 BB9 career he allowed 2 bombs and 2 walks in his 3 innings today. Plus did not cover the plate on a wild pitch. He was nervous plain and simple. He did not look like the guy I saw pitching in ST so I expect better. But the good was he was getting ahead of most batters and was fearless with most of his pitches. Right after the first HR he threw a first pitch strike to the next batter he faced with the same pitch. And was routinely pounding hitters in with the fastball. These aren't rookie abilities. He has the stuff and the mentality. To be continued.
I like that we have Stephenson and Reed in the pen and would keep them there. I'd let them come in games in an almost tandem spring training like starting fashion and battle it out for the rotation spots with Davis and Garrett. That's a healthy thing IMO. Reed BTW came in and allowed 0 runs but in his 2 innings had 4 walks. He also did not look like the spring training guy who had 3 plus pitches and was pounding the zone. But it's early. Anyway what do you think of this tandem idea? Eric and I were talking about it in the game thread. Defense had 1 error and no unearned runs and no passed balls. Looked pretty solid out there.
One thing both sides of the pitching equation did was strike out batters. Both were double digits in K9. The starters barely walked anybody but the bullpen for pitching to a microscopic ERA still walked 5.1 BB9. That is what got us in trouble last season. But as a whole they all looked good sans the control issues.
Overall a lot to feel good about and a lot to build on. In a series with plenty of ugly we found a way to get it done.
Damn I'm glad baseball is back!
