Mixed results and mixed emotions. Since the allstar break we are both 7th in OPS and Runs scored while being 10th in ERA with a 3.54. Which is a huge improvement over the pre allstar 5.47 and 20th in Runs and 28th in OPS. But the bullpen blows the series in game 1 and we come up duds last night. But for a road trip which we had a chance to go .500 barring yet another bullpen meldown I am not perturbed. We have been waiting to see what the team looked like when the pitching evolved and we are seeing it. It is the confidence if not the soul of the team. When everybody feels like they could win on any given night there is a quiet optimism. We are seeing it. And a point of emphasis albeit only 1 start, Cody Reed had a very nice outing in game 1 and should have gotten the win. Allowing only 5 baserunners in 6 innings in which he should have gone 7 were it not for an error he only struck out 4 but had 8 groundouts to 3 flyouts. Walking off the field his last 2 innings he was pounding his fist on his glove multiple times. He was feeling it. I expect a little more consistency going forward for him. Doing that on the road vs a good offense was huge. I was glad to see it because I made the chess vs checkers comparison last week. In the last 12 games we have had 9 quality starts. Bullpen has an ERA under 3. Despite the recent losing trend thus far we are finishing strong and that's what we were hoping to see. Hell I am watching every night again. That's saying something!
Til the last game we had a solid .371 OBP. And while I would like to see a balance of power to average we have not been HR dependent while still scoring runs.
Inflated WHIP which is dangerous but 2 more quality starts and the last 2 games our pitchers battled through control problems effectively.
Pitching the last 10 series.
BTW just wanted to throw this out there. There is a nasty strain of virus going around right now. We have been passing a summer cold around the family that is pretty serious. If you wake up with a sore throat or start to have even a mild cough develop get to the doctor immediately. I usually take Dayquil and work right through any sickness. I woke up with a sore throat Sunday. By Tuesday I was at the doctor and have been bed ridden ever since. Lungs ache, incessant cough, nose sore from drip and 4 boxes of Kleenex, earaches. If I don't feel better by tomorrow morning they are taking chest x-rays to see if I have pneumonia. So anyway get to the doctor if you show any of these symptoms. This virus is a real MF'er!
