This is more like it vs this team. I mentioned the other day the last time we played them we had come in on a streak of 10 games averaging 7 runs a game. We did exactly that in games 1 and 2 but lost the series that Sunday scoring 2 runs then the scoring fizzled and faded. This series we came in a little emotional and won the series. Monday did us good mentally because it put it into perspective what we are doing here and it's time to move on. Hopefully this is a sign that we will get that mental edge back for a series like this. But meanwhile the winning continues and boy what some good numbers to revel in!
While doing a stat correction just now I noticed that we are on pace to score 704 runs. Which we had not done since 2011 while coming close in 2013 with 698. For a dismal batting line on the season of .244/.305/.403/.708 that's solid. But we are 7th in HR's and 10th with RISP at .266. Coming on the heels of 595 Runs(2014) and 641 Runs(15) this is progress.
Offense
This is also progress. After hitting 3 bombs in the first game we hit none in the next 2 while scoring 11 runs. And it wasn't aided by excellent RISP stats either. But a big fat OBP. ONly 3 walks in those games but it is amazing what you can do to elevate an OBP when you hit for average. It is the easiest way to increase that OBP in a league where pitchers DON'T want to walk you! It's new saber metrics with a little new age common sense applied. Anyway an excellent line vs our nemesis.
Is anybody getting sick of watching Reed throw? I am because he is nothing but a thrower at this point and not a pitcher and he won't get anywhere til he starts playing chess not checkers. ERA was 7.07 before his start the other day and he allows 4 in the first inning. I could barely watch his half innings even though he bounced back and allowed 1 ER in the next 4 frames. Speaking of bouncing back Finnegan who I had showed had a 10.90 ERA over his last 4 starts before the gem in San Diego has now put together this since the allstar break including a 1 hitter and near perfect 6 innings today. All I want to see is progress from these young guys so this was a nice treat to see.
Got 2 quality starts which makes 5 of the last 7. Walks are down for everybody and the bullpen continues to be flashing top notch numbers. At least from anybody not named Diaz, Ohlendorf, and Wood.
Anyway St Louis is limping out of Cincinnati not knowing what hit em!
