Gloria Schrott-Kovel feeling nervous at Allegheny General Hospital. 14 hrs · Pittsburgh, PA · John is finally out of surgery. The Dr said if the blood flow is good in 24 hours he is confident the digit will remain. The tendon was pulled from the muscle in his forearm. The dr removed the tendon from John's pointer finger attached it to his thumb. We have to pray the blood flow gets better or he will loose his thumb. In about an hour they will move him to the ICU trauma unit. He is going to be pretty well sedated until tomorrow. The Dr fixed the break pins.... IV blood thinners so he needs monitoring every hour. Thank you all for prayers and support.
This is an update from facebook. Keep our buddy in your prayers today.

Good vibes coming your way Johnny. Hope the surgery is successful. As soon as you come back, I'll start a thread about who was the toughest player: Vontaze Burfict or Hines Ward. That ought to keep the board hopping for a good month or two.

Hey everyone thanks for the kind thoughts and texts, emails etc. I am on Facebook, John Kovel PM there I will give you my cell and email I don't want us to lose track of each other as nearly happened, 77, Choco, Steelerwoman, Lost, JJ, and all you others who I am sure I am forgetting right now, I am so glad that you found the board. Did Sky make it here? Sometimes (like all of us he would be an egghead but I liked what he brought, always loved to see he and JJ spar when the Ravens were good). Thanks to Rod for putting it all together, lets all send each other contact info I also have ulterior motives to be explained later on in this post.
Thumb is getting better slowly, fully severed the bone only skin and tendons/muscle kept it from tearing off and going into the batch of paint that I was preparing. Imagine a huge 55 gallon kitchen aid mixer with a powerful heavy sweeper arm and you get the idea. Anyhow, coulda been much worse so believe it or not this is about being thankful.
As far as football, I just re-watched the Steeler/Bengal playoff on NFL it was really a tale of two good teams trying their best to out-stupid each other. We handled you guys pretty well the first three quarters and then got pummelled the 4th quarter. Typical Steeler ball since later Chuck Noll years each coach has team playing great for three quarters and never being able to go for the jugular and put a team away. The officiating sucked for both teams, we shoulda been called for a few more (but geez, the Bengals were out of control at least a time or two almost every series). Clearly the refs once again did a piss poor job in pregame I would have got Marvin and Tomlin out into midfield an hour before game and told them that the first guy to act up like the last game even if it is your best player, be it James Harrison, or Vontez, Ben or Green, I am tossing them out of the game... and go ahead, try me if you think I am kidding. It really should be said to each coach every single game, shouldn't it? These guys are too important to the team to be thrown out it sucks when they miss for an injury. This being said... I love Burflect and how he plays when he is within the rules. I think he is/could be the best LB in league look at what he did, great sack of Ben then the diving interception that only all-pro LBs ever make. If that guy ever gets his stuff together he could play on my Steelers ANY TIME! About wanting everybody's info: Rod knows this, my 23 year old daughter is now working and living in Cincinnati, in Blue Ash! Once the weather breaks, the wife and I are gonna make a long weekend there and would really love to arrange on a way for us all to get together and meet at a bar and have a nice night, wear our Bengals and Steeler stuff and have a great time (maybe a Steelers Bar so I wont get beat up?). Whoknows, enough advance notice and we may be able to get Jjhuan and Steelerwoman to make the drive! I am gonna browse around through the posts here, drop me a line!

You,me,and Clinz are the early risers on this board as I see you two on about 6 am everyday! Sympathy thumb for Andy Dalton! That's classic! Yep getting old is hell. It took me a few years to get my blood pressure under control. I found out it was high a few years ago. That can strike you down harder than anything.Other than needing to lose a few pounds I can say I don't dominantly have any physical problems right now(thank god) but have had back and knee issues. Good luck on the surgery. My uncle had surgery on his leg and he says he feels like a new man so I would go into it optimistic.

Good to hear things are getting back to somewhat normal. I can't imagine how scary that would be not only to possibly lose a thumb but how it would affect everything else in your life because you do physical work. I would be fucked if I had a major physical injury! And it's relieving to hear another team's football fan talk about Burfict in this light,a Steelers fan nonetheless! He can be stupid but he is still an old school type player and has all the physical talents. The demasculinization of the game makes me sick. Nobody wants to have their players on the losing end of hard hits but it's necessary for the good and the future of the game to keep the physicality intact. This last board demise definitely has me rethinking all this and in the manner you are speaking of. I have been on the board starting with the Cincinnati.com board since 2004.12 years. We obviously like each other or us scleps wouldn't be yacking for over a decade! HAHA!! Anyway I think it's time to put some more names to faces. I met up with the occasional poster here and there but we could do better. Anyway I'm down, let me know bro. Gotta run...

LOL on the Dalton thumb! Heck yes I had sympathy for him! I am glad that he didn't come back against us in the playoffs probably a much different game then... I predict that I will be coming out there in no more than 3 weeks, as my wife is missing Amanda very much and really needs to see her! I will keep you all posted. Is there a good sports bar (hopefully close to Blue Ash) where as many of us as possible can all meet? PJ

I don't get to Blue Ash much but I like the location because it's right near the highway which is great for beer driving! LOL! Funny my daughter's name is Amanda too.
