28. Cincinnati Reds
Main Broadcasters: Thom Brennaman and Chris Welsh
Ratings (Charisma/Analysis/Overall): 2.4, 2.4, 2.3
Three Reader Comments
• “Chris Welsh is a damn near perfect blend of an old school ballplayer who is totally open minded and into learning new things.”
• “The Brennamans work in vitriol and acid the way some artists specialize in oils or acrylics.”
• “Thom Brennaman… displayed peak form last year during the Reds’ umpteenth rain delay with a rant about how the time has come for MLB to seriously consider mandating 30 domed stadiums.”
Notes
Whether founded or not, respondents for the Atlanta broadcast (above) suspected that Chip Caray might not hold his current job were he not the son (and grandson) of an established major-league broadcaster. Readers expressed similar suspicions regarding Thom Brennaman, whose father Marty is the Reds’ radio voice. It should be noted: a number of readers praise Welsh for his capacity to marry playing experience and more progressive baseball concepts.
27. Cincinnati Reds
Main Broadcasters: Marty Brennaman and Jeff Brantley
Ratings (Charisma/Analysis/Overall): 3.1, 2.7, 2.8
Representative Reader Comment
“Marty is a curmudgeon and his negativity and criticism of players tends to overshadow the fact that he is one of the very best in the business at the act of calling a ballgame.”
Notes
Many of the sentiments expressed by readers regarding Thom Brennaman appear relevant, as well, to his father Marty. Both Brennamans receive praise for their vocal timbre and narrative skills. Both also seem to exhibit a sort of antagonism with life itself, however, that doesn’t lend itself to the long-distance race that is a baseball season.

LOL, got me. Exactly on the neg. thing, but when they were good and they STILL hatefuck the reds every time one of the players don't get a hit w/ risp, 9th inning against fireballer closers etc., bitch about rain, the pace of baseball etc, etc, etc, then I just might voice an opinion. Marty's earned his bitching. Thommy? fuck him.

Thom is much better when he's calling NFL games on FOX. Marty and the Cowboy are still the most entertaining radio broadcasts in baseball. I always rank both Scully and Uecker ahead of them, but țheir ability on the radio has gone way downhill due to health problems. Just remember, one day Marty will be gone and Kelch will take over. Although he has improved dramatically over the years, he still is pretty mediocre in the booth.
