Deflate-gate - stealing signals - video taping a sideline. This is called 'a pattern of cheating' gang and if anyone is naive enough to think these three examples are the only incidences in which the Patriots have resorted to cheating to gain an advantage over an opponent, you're either a Pat fan or ignorant. It's my opinion that these three examples of cheating by the Pats are only the tip of the iceberg.
The Patriots have a well documented history of cheating, yet the league refuses to invoke any punishment that equals the crime. Considering the seriousness of these crimes, the punishments that the Pats have received (and are about to receive) are nothing more than a slap on the wrist. In my opinion, the league has decided to turn the other cheek when it comes to blatant cheating per the Pats because they don't want to tarnish the winningest team in the league over the last fifteen years+ as well as the league itself.
In the latest incident, which involves our Bengals, Head Coach Bill Belichick claims he knew nothing about the Bengals sideline being video recorded by Kraft employees and the league has come out said they have no evidence to the contrary. BS! Every head coach throughout the league is informed of everything that will be going on during a game. Head coaches actually demand to know what's going on. It's a part of being a high level head coach. Belichick's response is laughable at best if it weren't such a serious violation - a violation that I think he knew all about.
So, is Belichick lying? My best answer to this question is both 'yes' and 'no', but let's start with the 'no' first.
When Belichick states that he didn't know what the video crew was up to, he may be telling the truth. Another words, he probably doesn't give them specific directions before games nor does he follow them around the stadium to see what they're actually up to, thus he may technically be telling the truth, but only by playing word games.
I have little doubt that the video crew (nod, nod, wink, wink) knows what Belichick, et al, expects of them which, in my opinion, is illegal video recording that the Pats can and do use to give them an advantage over their opponents. I highly doubt that Belichick receives the video recordings personally. I'm sure they are 'funneled down' from the video crew to 'others' so that signals and other important information can be passed down to the coaching staff and eventually to the players. To think that a coach, that is well known to run a tight ship and keeps careful track of things, has no knowledge of these shenanigans is absurd, which would make Belichick a liar concerning his knowledge of what was going on.
One last note. When the Patriots were first accused of illegally video recording the Bengals sideline, Coach Belichick and other members of the Patriots immediately denied any wrongdoing on their part(s) whatsoever. All these denials and the owning up by Belichick that the video recording was illegal, came across as staged to me. It appeared to me that a protocol was in place that was to be used if the Pats were caught cheating again. The protocol would probably go something like this. 1) Play dumb. 2) Deny everything. 3) Downplay the seriousness of the infraction. 4) Be proactive by admitting a mistake was made in order to give the appearance that the Pats don't practice nor condone such tactics.
I find it absolutely absurd that a full and honest investigation isn't taking place (regardless of what's being reported). If found guilty, Coach Belichick should be banned from the league immediately. Unfortunately, it appears that the league thinks it's better to sweep the Pats cheating under the rug then own up to the fact that the Pats dynasty may owe some of its success to cheating and we just can't have that... or can we?
