A bit over two years ago, when Head Coach Urban Meyer announced that Dwayne Haskins would be Ohio State's starting QB, I knew he had made a mistake. This isn't an indictment of Meyer, he's one of the best college football coaches of all time and Haskins was a great QB for the Bucks. However, it was fairly obvious to me that Joe Burrow was the better QB of the two and should've been made the starter. I know some of you may be thinking that I'm really big on Burrow because I knew him (somewhat) on a personal level, but that's not the reason. All one needs to do to understand 'why' I was really high on Burrow as a big time NFL talent (before any college or NFL pundit), is to go to YouTube and pull up the video of him playing in the state championship game as an Athens High School Senior. In that game, you'll see Burrow doing almost everything then that he's doing now, only on a much higher level presently.
Although Athens lost the game, Burrow put on quite a show and demonstrated that he possessed every single facet of playing QB at a high level. Size, arm strength, vision, accuracy - it was all there. All Joe needed was a coach that would install him as a starter and thus allow him to improve upon his immense skill set. Thank the stars that LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron gave him that chance or Joe may still be considered a late round talent.
I have to be truthful with all of you - I can't believe I had Joe Burrow in class at AHS (right after he committed to Ohio State) and that he may go on to win the Heisman Trophy and a National Championship. After all, it's not everyday a person can claim to have taught such an incredible athlete with so many accolades and awards. I consider myself fortunate to have had such an amazing athlete and person in my classroom and was able to talk to him about his thoughts on signing with and playing for the Bucks. I have to pinch myself when the thought of him winning the Heisman Trophy and possibly the National Championship crosses my mind. It's all so surreal to me. Quite incredible actually... sorta like a dream.
