On paper, it looks as if the Bengals nailed another draft. And in a few short years we'll find out if that's true... or will we? In order to not only find out if this was a successful draft, but to also get this team to the next level, Marvin Lewis and company are going to have to part ways with a few players that are 'clogging up' this transition.
So lets get right to it. Domata Peko had a good run with the Bengals, but it's over. Keeping him on the roster and worse yet, giving him snaps is the last thing this team needs. It's time to move on from Peko and start giving his snaps to DTs Brandon Thompson, Marcus Hardison, DeShawn Williams and now Andrew Billings.
The same can be said of the WR position or to be blunt, Brandon Tate. Tate was a better returner than most realize due to his sure hands and a decent return average. But in the passing game he's been almost non-existent and he's not a break away threat when returning punts or kickoffs. Simply put, it's time for the Bengals to 'unclog' the WR position by moving on from Brandon Tate and thus allowing second year man Mario Alford and rookies Tyler Boyd and Cody Core to step up and contribute this year.
Questions also loom over the LB position where Vinny Rey and Rey Maualuga currently reside as the teams starters. But should they? If second year LBer Paul Dawson outperforms Vinny throughout camp and the preseason, shouldn't he be given the nod? And the same may hold true concerning Maualuga. If Nick Vigil is obviously the better option, shouldn't he start as well or at least be put into a rotation?
After all, isn't it the coaches job to put the best eleven on the field regardless of age or experience? I always thought so but that's not always been the case with Lewis. Lewis has his favorites which I'm OK with; but when you allow these relationships to hamper a teams chances of winning, that's when it becomes a problem and it's a problem that the Bengals can ill afford.
