The Bengals will be playing the role of underdog tomorrow when they take on the Carolina Panthers in Charolette. It's easy to understand why this is the case when you take a look at all the great players the Panthers have on both sides of the ball. They'll also be playing in front of a friendly home crowd which never hurts.
However, I watched a lot of the Panthers first two games and I wasn't blown away. The Panthers are vulnerable and I predict the Bengals will upset them and here's how it can be done.
1) Contain Cam Newton. Newton can and will take off when everything breaks down. The key is to keep him trapped inside the pocket and not give him large windows to pass or run through. Make him beat you from the pocket.
2) Stuff McCaffery. The first thing any defense needs to do to be effective is to stuff the run. McCaffery has been doing a great job at running the ball for Carolina and it's important that the Bengals shut him down from the get-go. The best way to do this is to fill the box AND defend the edges. McCaffery is also a great receiver out of the backfield, so it's extremely important for the Bengals to keep a spy on him when Newton drops back to pass. If the Bengals are successful at doing this, It's going to be a long day for the Panthers.
3) Spy Devin Funchess. The Bengals need to assign a defender, any defender, who's only assignment is to take Funchess out of the game. Funchess has come up big for the Panthers in getting first downs and consistently moving the chains.
4) Assign WJIII to the Panthers best receiver. Jackson is more than capable of shutting down any receiver on the Panthers roster. This alone gives the Bengals a big advantage by allowing Shawn Williams and Jessie Bates to roam the field and defend the run or the pass.
The Panthers don't have that many offensive weapons and the Bengals need to exploit this by taking what offensive weapons they do have out of the game. If McCaffery and Funchess put up bad numbers, the Bengals should win this game fairly easily.
On offense, the Bengals MUST implement a short passing game in order to keep the Carolina D from getting to Dalton. I think it's also important that Bill Lazor do a better job at disguising run plays. Through the first two weeks of the season, Bengal backs have been stopped in the backfield far too often. This has got to change regardless of how porous the Bengal o-line is.
And lastly, Dalton cannot allow so many of his passes to be batted down at the line of scrimmage by defensive linemen. Looking defenders off, throwing over them, pump faking, moving in the pocket, etc., are all techniques that can be used to fix this problem. If Dalton doesn't have any passes batted down and does a good job at protecting the ball, this will be huge if the game is close late in the fourth quarter.
