The Bengals really have me excited this year. Unlike years past, this team has made some major changes to the coaching staff which has in turn brought about a different philosophy concerning which players are retained and which ones are sent packing. The Bengals now have the second youngest team in the league (they were the youngest team before resigning Michael Johnson) following only Cleveland, but you wouldn't think so when you look at their starters. Dalton, Green, Eifert, Boling, Atkins, Dunlap, Williams, Kirkpatrick, Burfict, etc., are still out there and playing well. But the teams backups are about as solid as any team in the league and they proved so during the entire preseason.
Bates, Billings, Boyd, Carson, Core, Driskel, Erickson, Evans, Fejedelem, Glasgow, Hopkins, Hubbard, Jackson, Jefferson, Lawson, Malone, McRae, Mixon, Nickerson, Price, Redmond, Ross, Schreck, Tate, Tupou, Vigil, Walton, Westerman, Willis and Wilson are only going into their third, second or first season(s). That's 29 players total! Over half the team! Out of these 29 players, 11 are starters (in bold type) at their respective positions. Now take a look at all the players that AREN'T starting. That's a solid group of players. Even the practice squad is strong as is the injured reserve list. Regardless of the teams record this year, which I think is going to better than what the so-called 'experts' are predicting, this is a young team that's on the rise. The only missing ingredients this team lacks is a 'hands off' owner, a stricter and imaginative head coach, 2 offensive linemen and possibly a QB. Get these problems fixed, and the team will have a legitimate shot at becoming a REAL Super Bowl caliber team.
